Primary school enrollment nearly doubled since 1990

Although the development goal of universal primary school enrollment has not yet been achieved, the progress is still very much encouraging.

  • The number of out of school children was reduced by 43% (from 100 to 57 million) . The net enrollment rate in developing regions now stands at 91% (!).
  • In Sub-Saharan Africa, the number of children enrolled in primary school more than doubled from 69 to 149 million.
  • The literacy rate of young people in the range of 15 to 24 used to be at 83% in 1990, but has now reached 91%
