China reforested 160,000km² between 2000 and 2010

It is unbelievable to me that such news was never featured in mass media news reports (at least in Austria it wasn’t). Although old news, I don’t think many people know about this, which is a shame because most of the time you only hear bad news about smog, carbon emissions etc. from China.
Reforesting an area equivalent to double that of Austria – or Equal to Tunesia if that gives you more of a hint – is no small feat and should be applauded. The great thing about this is that the reforestation can even be seen from space according to this report from Nature World News. Also, keep in mind that China’s efforts are continuing and by now the reforested area is probably much larger.

There is however a little catch! China is now importing much more timber than before, which could mean that the problem of deforestation has just shiftedto other countries. It remains to be seen whether there is a total net gain in forests or not. I definitely believe so since the reforested area is so huge that it would have been noticed by now if it were missing in the countries China is importing from. Maybe I’m naive, but that’s my opinion!

I hope many people will read about this either here or somewhere else and find that behind all the negative news coverage, there is always more good news!
